24-bit from Audigy 2?

Hi all,

My question is as follows; I have an Audigy 2 and all over the box is plastered "24-bit/192khz DVD-Audio play back. I also have the Inspire 6.1's which are supposed to be a good match for the Audigy 2. However, I was wondering wether I'm acutually getting 24-bit/192 khz playback when playing DVD-Audio. This is because the 6.1's are analog speakers, and I have a feeling that 24-bit sound is only available through the digital out. Can someone please explain this for me.

Kind Regards

The 24-bit/192KHz refers to the signal path taken from the DVD-Audio to the analog outputs on the back of the card. The Audigy 2 will not require a downsampling of this digital stream before the signal reaches the digital-to-analog convertors on the card. In all cases, the signal will need to be converted to analog in order to be passed to the speaker units themselves.

Most DVD-Audio players only output through analog connections, because it is not part of the DVD-Audio specification to allow any player to pass an unencrypted digital stream of the high resolution DVD-Audio. As well, the standard S/PDIF digital connection probably doesn't have the necessary bandwidth anyways to handle 24-bit/192KHz audio, so analog is the typical connection for nearly all DVD-Audio setups. The only way you can use digital is with high-end components such as Pioneer Elite, Meridian and certain Denon models that use their own proprietary digital connection.
